What is Gun Powder

Gunpowder is a low-explosive substance that is used as a propellant in firearms. It burns rapidly and produces a large amount of gas, which produces a pressure wave inside the gun barrel, sufficient to propel a shot charge, bullet or projectile from a shotgun, rifle, or artillery piece. Gunpowder is distinguished from “high” explosives—dynamite, TNT, etc.—because of its lower burning speed, which produces a slower pressure wave less likely to damage the barrel of a gun.
